Legacy
Legacy is Greta Panettieri's new album and live project, bringing together the great jazz tradition, contemporary songwriting and the rhythmic energy of Cuban percussion.
The project is based on a clear idea: the legacy of the great masters is not something to preserve, but something to keep alive, transform and reinvent. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Carla Bley and Milton Nascimento are deeply connected to the history of jazz, yet impossible to confine to a single definition. Their music embraces jazz, soul, pop, Brazilian music, research, groove, avant-garde and cross-pollination. It is precisely within this space, free from genre boundaries, that Greta Panettieri moves together with Andrea Sammartino — a.k.a. Greta's Bakery — through a repertoire that alternates great compositions from the past with original songs, creating a direct dialogue between memory and the present.
A surprising repertoire
The program explores some of the most innovative pages in jazz and its evolution, reinterpreted through Greta Panettieri's voice, sensitivity and distinctive style. Highlights include I Thought It Was You by Herbie Hancock, Infant Eyes by Wayne Shorter, Tudo Que Você Podia Ser by Milton Nascimento and Lawns by Carla Bley, enriched here by the vocalese written by Kurt Elling.
Jazz meets Cuba
Greta Panettieri's core formation, with Andrea Sammartino, Daniele Mencarelli and Alessandro Paternesi, is joined by Cuban percussionist Idalberto “Tupachanga” T.P., bringing a strong Afro-Cuban element to the project. The percussion does more than add colour: it ignites the groove, intensifies the dialogue between the musicians and brings new energy to the songs, creating a natural bridge between jazz, Latin and Brazilian music and the African-American tradition. The result is a dynamic, sophisticated and deeply rhythmic concert, able to speak both to jazz enthusiasts and to a broader, cross-genre audience.
A project made for the stage
Legacy was created to be experienced live. It is a concert built around dialogue between voice, instruments, improvisation and rhythm, where fidelity to great music leaves room for interpretive freedom.
